Drivers of modern cars are unaware or do not know how the assistance systems they have, especially the extremely widespread cruise control, work. In a study report by the American Automobile Association, most drivers do not know how some of the driving aids work, and in particular cruise control. In fact, it is reported that drivers tend to trust cruise control more than they should for safety reasons. For example, there are drivers who are sure that their car will stop when it detects an object or a vehicle in front, while others are convinced that active cruise control can activate itself and take control of the throttle.
According to experts from the American Automobile Association, the reason for all these “problems” is that drivers do not undergo any training before getting behind the wheel of a modern car. The information provided to them by the dealer when selling the car is extremely scarce. And the hope that “the driver will learn by doing many times” does not work in this case, because the average person behind the wheel cannot understand this technology. “This study shows that modern car technology requires a more serious approach from drivers. Owners of modern cars must undergo training before using the new assistance systems,” said Gene Ladoucer, an expert on road safety issues at the American Automobile Association.
In order to avoid fatal mistakes, the American Automobile Association has created a basic compass for new car owners, in order to understand the seriousness of the issue. Initially, you should, with the help of the seller, understand the technology, read the car’s user manual and visit the manufacturer’s website for audiovisual examples of the systems’ operation. Then, try out the new technology for you in a safe environment and, most importantly, never rely exclusively on the system, but act as if it does not exist and be ready to take control at any time. Cruise control is a system that ensures that the speed chosen by the driver is maintained constant, without the latter having to press the accelerator. It exists in various forms, with the most advanced systems also maintaining a constant distance from the car in front, thus being a semi-autonomous driving technology. The use of cruise control is advisable on the highway, since, among other things, its smooth operation also improves fuel consumption.
